What this answers

Kansas measures depth to water across the High Plains aquifer and fits a surface to those measurements. The Kansas Geological Survey publishes that surface. Nobody publishes it as an answer to the question a landowner actually asks — how far has it fallen under my land, and from what?

On the 25,875 sections that carry both figures, the median has moved 18.2 ft. Nine in ten are within 133.1 ft. The deepest fall on the file is 292.9 ft. And 5,151 sections — 19.9% — sit higher than before development.

This surface covers the High Plains aquifer — western and central Kansas. Eastern Kansas is almost entirely absent (69 sections out of 33,190), and that is not a gap in the data: the aquifer does not extend there. A section with no figure here is not a section with no water. What is covered.

Who has drilled, and where

Each township page carries the wells sunk in it: 1,351 named drillers across the mesh, 77,783 completion records, with the decade they were drilled, the depth they reached and the water level the driller measured on arrival. That is a join nobody else publishes — the Survey's water-table surface on one side, the WWC-5 well completion records on the other.
