## How far has the water table fallen under your land?

### What this answers

Kansas measures depth to water across the High Plains aquifer and fits a
surface to those measurements. The Kansas Geological Survey publishes that
surface. Nobody publishes it as an answer to the question a landowner actually
asks — *how far has it fallen under my land, and from what?*

On the 25,875 sections that carry both figures, the median has moved
**18.2 ft**. Nine in ten are within 133.1 ft. The deepest
fall on the file is **292.9 ft**. And
**5,151** sections — 19.9% — sit
*higher* than before development.

This surface covers the High Plains aquifer — western and central Kansas. Eastern Kansas is almost entirely absent (69 sections out of 33,190), and that is not a gap in the data: the aquifer does not extend there. A section with no figure here is not a section with no water. [What is
